How can I replace my Nokia Lumia 520 power button?

Hi,

Has anybody replaced the power button on a Nokia Lumia 520? If so, where can I buy a replacement button?

Thanks for your help.

Same problem here with Lumia 620. I used Wouter's solution and button is working perfectly again. Here's a step-by-step (...for the really clueless...)

-remove cover

-use paperclip to push button (...if that works cover is the problem...)

-after that use paperclip to push button "up" towards the touchscreen (...gently...)

-the button should NOT move upwards AT ALL (...compare with working buttons...)

-mine only had a half mm tolerance wich apparently is enough to cause disfunction

-i used material from a disposable plastic drink bottle (...anything aprox 0.5mm thick...)

-cut to size aprox 5mm x 25mm with scissors

-push the narrow side in on top of button (...between button and screen...)

-insert about 5mm

-test button by pushing with paperclip

-if it works then cut extruding bit of plastic with scissors

-use paperclip or fingernails to push plastic in completely

-replace cover

-PRESTO

-(i applied the trick to the other functioning buttons also as a precaution)

It worked perfectly! Thank you very much pgamoot!

I have just done as suggested to my Nokia 520 as the only way to switch it on was using the camera button. There was very little movement but after inserting a piece of plastic book cover the button is now working.

thanks.

It worked on my lumia 620 as well... just took me 1min for solving the problem, with a piece (5x5mm) of plastic file cover approx 0.5mm tickness.... Thanks...

if you don't want to mess with phone ( as it voids warranty ) try this:

If you have a nokia lumia 520 and cant use lock and unlock ( also power off/on button), plug into charger, the phone will come on auto, go to settings>display and touch>touch>click option to double tap to unlock screen. You can now access phone when it goes on lock screen by double tapping any were on screen. This is a common fault with them. However you cant turn fone off doing this, but at least you can use phone. my button suddenly went on mine today ( common fault due to lead based solder apparently) and did research and didn't help but tried different settings and found this out, hope this helps you if you have same issue, ( although I did do the bit of plastic method and it does work)

The screen can be turned off by using an app Screensaver one. This app locks your phone and as stated above the double tap feature can be used to unlock the phone. I have a broken power key and have been using the phone like this for last 9 months. It works fine no issues. You will miss the power button in my cases though like the screenshot. :)

Yes it works....Thanku so much...

My Nokia 520 always had dodgy button since new. Thanks for the One Touch Lock Screen App OFF and double-tap ON concept - button not needed anymore!

- de

Thank You so much.... Now it's working... Grate help..

agreed... but, if it still has warranty, get it back into the shop & let them have the headache :) ...

Effective solution! I used the material that comes with pills. It's like aluminium and easy to cut and shape. Button is snappy again. Thanks.

I had the same problem with lumia 620. I tried the Wouter's solution but the gap was too small for me. Button was working but was bit hard to press and my last button broke because of this(I had replaced button but was still hard to press). My friends lumia 620 had a smooth press while mine was tough. So I unscrewed the top part and place some a small cardboard piece from pack of cigarettes and then put all screws back. Now the button is smooth again like new. Thank you very much.

The right way!

Using a piece of plastic under the power switch to hold it down means, that the power button is loose. It’s not making a full connection. I used a magnify glass before I used the plastic. I saw the pins go up and down as I hit the button. I placed the plastic as everyone said. I notice it stayed down and it was making the connection to the board. This is a poor design flaw. So I was not happy with the above Gumby fix. It has issues that will get worst over time. So I took my phone apart and added a pin drop of electrical solder to each of the four pins of the on/off switch. You need a very hot soldering iron and the size or diameter of solder I used is .025in/0.64mm. Once you soldering iron is hot, you just need to tap each corner quickly with very little solder on the iron. Make sure you’re in a very well lit area. And to see the connections and pins better I used my magnifying glass and focused on the areas. Anyway my power button works better than before. So I am very happy now. (Do not try this if you don’t know how to solder) you mess it up…

The video helped me fix the problem with the power button: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLpmEPqE...

I did not need pliers to insert it.

If you need pliers I wonder if the strip is too thick?

In my case the strip slid in easily above the power button but not above the volume buttons or the camera button, but they still seem to work more or less normally.

The power botton was the one that did not work anymore.

Hi All I got the same issue a day ago. Took it to the Nokia Care service centre. They had a look and said the key is to be replaced and will cost INR 650 + tax (approx USD11)!!!

I took the phone back without servicing. Came home and opened the thing apart and had a good look on the switch. The culprit actually is no key or switch, but the solder that holds the switch to the board. There is so little solder on the terminal which is supporting the switch against the countless lock/unlock presses!!! Eventually, the solder comes off and makes the circuit open making the switch non functional. I just applied little more solder and made the dry solder joint good. Now it works like a charm! :)

I have the same symptoms but the gap under the switch is too narrow to allow this fix to be applied. The double tap is a reasonable workaround but it IS irritating to have an inoperative power button!

I tried some pill blister pack foil and it didn't work. Then I tried some plastic from an Indian food take away container and that DID work. I think the plastic worked because it was thicker than the blister pack foil. Thanks for sharing this method for fixing this issue!

Update

To turn on double tap to unlock on wp8.1 denim:

ALL SETTINGS -> touch -> Wakeup -> On

Thank you so much, was in the middle of messages from one of my bosses and sending her messages the phone went off, the on/off button failed ( it was for a week working but after 30seconds to 1minute holding it down) I took off the cover and low and behold they Upton had some how come off.

I already had to send the phone back as screen too sensitive ( my brother bought it in a differentt country he lives so it was gone four months, took almost three to fix and got upgraded to windows8 which helped a lot of other problems in phone).

Then today the power button completely failed. Searched on Google, found this forum.

Thank you so much now I can use my phone still. I love my Lumia 520.

One question does the double tap to wake up phone only work if the phone is switched on. If you forget to charge it and it goes dead, you begin charging it with a charger does the double tap work to wake up phone so you can enter the pin?

Genius solution! The standby button of my Nokia 520 wasn't functioning all too well. I added a piece of plastic as you described, and now the button works perfect again! Thanks.

My Lumia 520 had a similar problem. I could switch on and off but couldn't open the lock(pressing the button once). Sometimes it would work but sometimes it wouldn't . So I got the button replaced and still no success, it was just like earlier. So here's what you should do- after getting the button replaced if it still doesn't work, do a hard reset of the phone and it should work. It worked for me :). Hope this helps.h
