Blown Capacitor at point D15 on Logic Board

Hey guys!

So I acquired a powerbook 180 from work. Unfortunately, it didn't work when I plugged it in. I opened it up, took it apart, and found a bulging capacitor. It's square, has the letters KM on it, and is set at pins labeled "D15" on the logic board near the charging port. It gets very hot when plugged in.

Any idea how I would go about fixing this or acquiring parts?

You can see there is electrolyte leaking from the part.

Thanks!

the letter D makes it a Diode, not a capacitor. Now we just have to find the right one:-)

afischer15, just checked your images again. The "KM" you referred to is actually a "KW" That marking and the D15 identify your component as a DDZ13B SURFACE MOUNT PRECISION ZENER DIODE. The part is available at places like this. The datasheet containing all the specs for the diode is available right here. Hope this helps, good luck

Hate to bump this old thread, but I wanted to let you know that I was able to use my (somewhat lacking) soldering skills and get the computer to boot successfully. You rock!

You know what? that is actually really great of you, to come back here to let us know you got it done. That is truly great fixin' Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks for this info. I replaced D15 with DDZ13B SURFACE MOUNT PRECISION ZENER DIODE from Mouser but it seems too small. I was able to get it to power on now but the PB180 powers off after a high current draw (hard drive booting up). Is this Zener diode suitable for location D15?

@mikematkovic I just re-verified and yes, that is the right one for D15

Hello, afischer15!

Please let me know, you just replaced the diode DDZ13B and the computer turned on successfully?

Wow, this is old!

Yes - I was able to get the computer to boot after replacing the diode. It is a bit finicky, sometimes the screen flickers, and the computer shuts itself down when a floppy is inserted, but it boots to the login screen just fine. I haven't had time to try to figure out the password, sadly. I do have the number of the former owner... I should call him up.
