How to install a window to replace AC unit?

Hi Folks,

Finally got around to removing a heavy old built in Air conditioner unit from my living room.

I'd like to install a window that can be opened to let the breeze flow. Could anyone let me know where to start?

Thank you!

Jacob

Update

Thanks for the support so far. Working on removing the metal frame the air conditioner was housed in this morning. At first nice and quietly with the bolt cutters as not to disturb the neighborhood. Then, more successfully using the angle grinder to cut away the box.

Update

The opening is roughly 26.5 by 18.5.

Here is a view from the outside.

And a look from inside.

How about a photo from the other side?

Jacob, couple more pics will definitely help. BTW love the architecture, real brisk and a solid wall, excellent!!!!

Jacob, that is a definite ifixit job:-) Keep us informed about your progress. Still wondering what the window opening looks like from the inside and outside with the AC removed. what are the dimension of the opening?

The base of the AC unit was resting on the roof below. Some tar was keeping it in place. I used a crowbar aka "Sparticus" to pry up the final pieces.

Jacob, great demolishing job:-)! anyhow, at this time you will have to repair the brick work in the opening. Use what looks like a top beam in your pictures as the lentil. Get some pressure treated lumber and fasten it with anchor bolts around the window opening. That will give you something to mount the new window to. I would check sites like this for installation instruction. Of course, not knowing where you live, you also want to make sure that you have proper drainage away from the window etc. Follow your local building code. It is a relatively small opening, so keep the framing reasonable. The attached images shows how it should be done:-)Hope this helps, good luck.
