Jackie, try this first :"1. At start up press F2 and enter the BIOS Setup, does the BIOS see the hard drive is present?

2. If you remove/disconnect the hard drive data cable (or disable the drive in the BIOS setup), does your Dell computer say,

"strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

If the drive is detected properly, but you get only a blinking cursor, yet removing/disconnecting gives you the message in #2 it is a boot loader problem.

3. Run Diagnostics (they are built in) - When you turn on your comptuer if you press CTRL + ALT + D (Not Delete) it will say something like:

IDE Drive Diagnostics running, please wait..."

Thank you it is working. I have diasabled each and every device and found that CD/DVD drive is not working so the loader keeps on checking for Drive problem( for 20 mins) once it could not figure out it switches to other device. If you disable the corresponding device it works fine

On those old Dell laptops you can "reset" them by unplugging it, removing the battery, then the RAM, replace the RAM then the battery. This can clear all kinds of minor glitches. However, if the problem is of a more serious nature then you may have to contemplate cutting your losses and getting a new laptop as this one is worth less than it would cost to have it repaired professionally.

I wouldn't work on this laptop if one of my customers brought it to me other than checking for simple way to fix it. I'd encourage them to let me salvage date off of the hard drive in order to move it to a new laptop.

Good luck.

what about if you are in a place/country where replacements are not easy options:-) any chance there is a fix to it? could this be caused by a bad hard drive or no OS?

No, this wouldn't be caused by a bad hard drive or no OS. Each of those would cause it not to boot into windows, but there would be an error generated by the BIOS in both cases. From his description it's not even getting to the BIOS. The number of reasons for that is to many to count.

If he is "in a place/country where replacements are not easy options" then he's screwed. I give it about a 90% chance he'll need to replace something in order to fix it. In that case he'll need two things.

1. The know how to trouble shoot the hardware himself.

2. The ability to get parts for an 8 year old laptop in a "place/country where replacements are not easy options".

If he dosen't have the knowhow to fix it himself then he'll be paying someone else to do it and it'll end up costing at least as much as a new (cheep) laptop, if not a lot more.

Okay, so mine goes like I turn it on go log in then I go to Google Chrome and it goes black I believe it turned off, but It's on the charger so it's not the battery. I need to fix it ASAP because it's my grandma's computer! :/

You can try performing a system restore before you try to install a new OS so for perform system restore is to open safe mode by clicking F8 on start-up and check safe mode

option then further a dialogue box will open to ask for system restore and then follow the above steps.
