MacBook Air 2013 to 2011 battery compatibility?

Hello everyone,

I have a mid-2011 macbook air that requires a battery replacement (it says service battery and its capacity has reduced to about 70%).

Now, its startled me that the new 2013 macbook air, which has a 7150mAh capacity battery is not compatible with the mid-2011 model according to ifixit.com.

I'm just finding it a bit difficult to understand why that may be the case, the capacity of my battery when it was new was 6700mAh and I thought that I would be able to replace it with the 2013 battery which is exactly the same physical size and shape..

What do you guys think? Am I missing something here? Could it be something to do with the CPU current?

There is often other things that make it not fit or work. In this case I suspect the dimension of the battery that's different.

You can contact someone at iFixit (link on the bottom of the page)..this is the volunteer DIY help forum. The parts catalogue here says they don't work... a seller on ebay claims theirs do.

Even if it does fit it will not provide any significant (i.e. noticeable) change in use time on an older machine... much of the efficiency is due to the HASWELL low energy infrastructure CPU architecture by INTEL CPU and GPU/display changes.

It's sort of like saying... a new Chevy (or pic your automotive brand) gets more horsepower, or, better milage on brand XXX high test gasoline. I'll put the same gas in my two year old same brand and expect the same horsepower/milage... it ain't gonna happen. The new vehicle can have more plastic, different tires, improved fuel management computer... you need all the same pieces in place to get a near equal end result.

Hi there, just want to confirm that the 2013 battery (7150mAh) does indeed work in any macbook air from 2010 to 2013 inclusive. I have mixed batteries from all the wedge shaped MBAs, and currently have a 7150mAh (2013) installed in a 2010 MBA, and the 6700mAh (2012) installed in another 2010 MBA.

You will get a small increase in battery life, however obviously nowhere near as much as the actual '13 MBA because it's the lower clock Haswell processors that allow this.

The issue that created concern to me is that from Part Catalog, Product code: {IF188-070-1 Apple Part #: 661-6055, 661-6639} fits Mid-2011/Mid2012, and Product code: {IF188-086-1 Apple Part #: 661-7474} fits Mid 2012 to Early 2014. So the question becomes why Mid 2012 can use older and newer batteries only but not the other MacBook Air's

how much is a small increase in battery life? how better is the duration of a battery please? thank you :)

- de

double confirmed! the increase is according to the amperage rating given by this answer 6700 -> 7150. in my case i took out a 2013 battery with 93 charge cycles on it and, according to coconutBattery, it still retains over 6700 mAh, meaning I still get more than the original battery in this machine!

Hello-

Just wanted to confirm also that a 2013 mba 13" battery will work in a 2011 mba 13" laptop. I just did this, and no sparks or fire. :)

The battery shouldn't be a factor here. If you also have the MagSafe adapter connected and still having issues you have something else going on here. Best to create your own question with as much details as possible.

Description for the MacBook Air 2013 to 2015 battery says:

"Replacement battery compatible with all 1.3 or 1.7 GHz (Mid 2013), 1.4 or 1.7 GHz (Early 2014), and 1.6 GHz or 2.2 GHz (Early 2015) 13" MacBook Airs, and backward compatible with 1.8 or 2.0 GHz (Mid 2012) 13" MacBook Airs. This is an Apple original (OEM) battery. "

so... if the first battery is compatible for 2010 to 2015 models, and annother is compatible to 2013 to 2015 models, then I'd apply thee fundamental mathematical theorem, stating

if A = C and B = C

then A = B :-)

How about logic boards are they interchangeable between a 2011 MacBook Air 11” and a 2014 MacBook Air 11” ?

I got a 2011 in good cosmetic condition but doesn’t work and I found a working 2014 for cheap with the casing and screen all banged up.

So the idea would be swap logic boards and maybe keep the bottom plate from the 2014 (serial number and model number) can it be done or would it be completely different?
