Black screen on bootup, sometimes flickers

I have a iMac with what seems like a faulty display. When I boot on the computer I get the typical mac bong sound but I do not get a display or it would come on flickering. The LED diagnostic lights show all four on or when the screen is flickering the forth LED will flicker as well. I have tried plugging into an external display and get no image on the screen. I have tried replacing the logic board and the LCD. I'm thinking that it is an issue with the inverter but before I put out the money for a new inverter I'm hoping that there is a way to test the inverter or if anybody has a better idea of what the issue could be.

Normally when you have no external video you have VGU/VGC problems. I know of no shade tree mechanic method to test an inveter (it could be the internal culprit - but no external video, to me, points to larger/different issue(s))

Well I turned around and used a multimeter to test the invert and was not receiving any current through the inverter so I ordered one of them today. I figure it's the cheapest of the two. When it arrives I'll update this on what the status of the imac is. I agree that VGU/VGC seems like the most obvious culprit but based on the multimeter reading and the fact that the adapter I used to test the external monitor is old enough to have been made by cave men I'm putting my money on black and hoping its the inverter
