The NXP IC is used in the 3G, not the 3GS. The 3GS uses D1755 (338S0768), a chip made by Analog Semiconductor, and having pins marked upto 77 in the schematic, whereas PCF50663 has 68 pins. Probably a custom IC made just for Apple. As production is low, and demand high due to the high failure rate, it's an expensive IC for what it does.

You replaced the logic board? if this didn't fix it, you might have a bad battery, or a bad dock connector.

Guys, i just follow someone's idea to use a flashlight to get to settings, and managed to turn Auto Brightness OFF and slide the bar to the lowest point. Turned the iphone off and the on and Voilaaa! I can see what im doing with a very low light but operational at least. But the minute you crank up the slider to make it brighter it will go back to black. So, maybe with these symptoms an expert can tell me if this smells like coil, IC or what?! thanks!
