Transfer data from old HD to new before installation

I saw a how to video that showed a cord used for transferring data from the old hard drive to the new one before installing the new hard drive. Now that I'm ready to order I can't seem to find it anywhere. Laptop MacBook A1278

You'll need an external HD case (bare) to house your new drive in then have this plugged into either a firewire port (best) or USB port on your system before you open it up.

Using Apples Migration Assistant App (which you have in your app folder) copy over your OS, settings & all of your files over to the new disk. Then to double check things go into your systems preferences and alter your boot disk to this external drive and restart your system at that point the external drive should be the top most HD in the finder.

Now shut down your system take it apart swap your drives put the system back together and restart. Your new drive should be all set.

Will it make much difference between FireWire and USB if FireWire is not available?

Here's a combo FireWire/USB3 case: OWC Mercury On-The-Go. Well Yes & No ... A firewire connection will be much faster than a USB1 or 2 connection if you have an older Mac system. The newer Mac systems have USB3 which is just fine.

Doesn't offer a second ATA connection within the MB system so you can't copy files from the current drive over. It does work on iMac desktop systems that have a second ATA port.

Another way to transfer files from hard drives is to plug in both hard drives in but of course if one of the HD are not the same type then this will not work.

As he's swapping the drives they need to be the same I/O (PATA or SATA). Your right if he had a newer system which had a SATA drive you can't directly connect a PATA drive from an older system in it. Migration Assistant could offer the needed means via a direct Firewire or Ethernet connection between the systems or using an external HD case connected via Firewire (best) or USB to transfer the HD to (if the old system is dead) then use Migration Assistant to salvage the files.

looks like your jumping ahead of yourself, there is one computer and 2 drives, i already explained the PATA to SATA issue. there is no need for a external case when he just needs his files transferred over to his new HD. the best way and the cheapest way is to have both drives mounted and do the transfer without having to buy plugs and adapters.

I see how you thought that, no, just offering a different way. Often people are switching to a new system. Your org post implied an internal connection not the fact the second drive would be via a different I/O (USB/Firewire)
