iMac wont start up past white apple screen?

My iMac wont boot up past the white apple screen with the spinning circle. This happened after my mac froze then i had to turn it off by holding down the power button. Any help would be wonderful and also what this means. Unfortunately i lost my start up disc so this probably doesn't help.

thanks very much.

How to Clear the PMU 1. Step 1 Quit all of your active applications and shut down your Mac. 2. Step 2 Once your computer is completely shut down, disconnect the computer's AC power. 3. Step 3 Press and hold down the power button on your iMac for at least five seconds and then release the power button. 4. Step 4 With your Mac still shut off reconnect the AC power. The PMU/SMU has now been reset on your computer.

Next try resetting the PRAM. Start up and immediately hold down the option - command and the "P" & "R" keys. Wait till you hear three tones, then let it try to start up.

I presume when you say "disconnect the computers Ac power adapter and remove the battery from your mac" you mean Or (depending on whether you have a MacBook or iMac)?

I've done this, still have apple logo and spinning wheel.

I got a restore disk, but it was the wrong rev. I think the machine told what the correct was. But I can't get back to that point. How do you the OS from the CD drive?

Clearing the PMU/SMU and resetting the PRAM worked only once on my iMac G5. I shut down the computer at the day's end. Upon booting up again, the white page with a dark gray folder with a question mark in its middle flitters I'm the middle of the page. After several additional tries at resetting the PMU/PRA as well as PRAM routine the question mark folder is still flashing. In the final analysis, Apple Care recommends reinstalling the original OSX install disks. Hopefully, you will have everything backed up since reinstallation may damage/delete some or all of your files.

This exact thing happened with me and my iMac G5 recently...tried all of the above and still, couldn't get to 'Loading OSX'...tried booting in 'safe mode' and that did the trick!

To boot in safe mode, press the power button...as soon as you hear the Mac tone (noise from speakers when you turn it on) press and hold down the 'shift' key....once you see the 'Loading OSX' screen you can let go of the shift key.

Worked fine...rebooted and still working without a problem for me!

In my case (iMac wont boot up past the white apple screen with the spinning circle.) it is a motherboard faulty: capacitors burst. HDD Test passed.
