Hi,
Check that the lid switch is working.

I don’t know if the sensor is a magnetic type or a light sensor but you could try running a magnet around the power button area to see if that affects it at all.
Normally when the laptop is turned on, there is power to the backlights all the time and the backlight power is turned on and off ''in the display panel'' by the lid switch signalling the BIOS which signals on the ''blon'' lead to the display panel.
Here’s an image taken from a motherboard schematic which ''may not'' be your board (it’s from a HP Pavilion/Envy 14″ 15″ 17″ Quanta Y11 Y11A Y11C DAY11AMB6E0 schematic so hopefully similar concept) to show how it works. '''The connections may be different on your board.'''
