You should be able to but be aware that there will be a loss of some features if you do unless you make provision for them
The webcam, microphone and most probably the WiFi (not sure on this but you will find out if the antennae are in the lid, if so you will have to re-route them if you wish to keep the WiFi) will all be affected if you remove the lid.
-Also, again not sure but you may not be able to see the BIOS screen as the external monitor may not function until the laptop boots into Windows. You have to check the options in BIOS to see if using an external monitor is an option on startup.

Perhaps it may be wise to just disconnect the video cable from the motherboard and see if it works as you want before totally removing the screen etc.
