PC70THD
Background
The Porter Cable Hammer Drill (model PC70THD) is a 7-amp 1/2-inch VSR 2-speed hammer drill designed by Porter Cable. There are two types of this drill, Type 1 and Type 2, but there are virtually no differences in the drills, so this page applies to both types. This corded drill is used for drilling into tougher materials such as metal or concrete, but can also function as an ordinary drill. It is lightweight and designed with an adjustable handle for comfortable use over long periods of time.
This drill operates at two speeds: 0-1100 and 0-3100 rotations per minute (RPM). It has a 7-amp motor, which makes it very easy for this tool to break through harder surfaces such as brick or masonry. The tool is corded, weighs just over 6 pounds, and is just over 14 inches long.
This drill first appeared in stores in October of 2011. It is a more powerful version of its predecessor (PC650D) with a 7-amp motor instead of a 6.5-amp motor. This drill, along with drills from other brands, did have one recall in 2018 related to its side handle, but has had no major issues since then. Over the years, this product has received many rave reviews regarding its power, durability, affordability, and easy use.
Porter Cable has one other corded hammer drill: the Porter Cable Hammer Drill model PCE141. This drill is also 1/2-inch, but only has one speed and utilizes CSR instead of VSR. The tools are visually very similar, but the biggest differences are that the PC70THD is longer and has a knob on the side to adjust the speed. There is also a Type 1 and a Type 2 of the model PC70THD, but there is no information suggesting any noticeable differences between the two drills.
Identification
The Porter Cable Hammer Drill PC70THD is a longer, lightweight version of a drill. It is dark gray towards the back, light gray in the middle, and has the Porter Cable logo on the left hand side. It has a large black adjustable handle towards the front with an attached depth rod, a plastic black knob on the left-hand side to adjust the speed, and a plastic red switch on the top to switch between hammer and drill modes. The trigger is also bright red. The front of the drill is housed in cast metal to help cool the drill during use and prevent overheating. To positively identify the model of this drill, the model name is listed in the top-left corner of an informational panel on the right-hand side of the drill. The type number is also listed below and slightly to the right of the model name.
