Why is it running so slowly?

Two days ago, my MacBook Pro was running slowly so I tried to restart it.

When it turned back on, it stayed on the logo screen for a very long time. I tried many different troubleshooting methods that I found here (My mac is stuck on the white startup screen!). I tried all of them.

It's turning on now but It seems I can only open Finder and Safari, however both take about seven minutes to open. No other applications will open.

When I try to type into the URL bar, it takes another five minutes or so for a cursor to even appear. I've been trying to to a simple task (login to my gmail account) for over an hour.

I have no idea what the issue could be. I'd like to try to fix it at home before I go to a Genius Bar, as the laptop is no longer under warranty.

I can't afford a new computer and use this one for writing every day. Please help!

Can you focus things down a bit here Apple has produced quite a few different 13" MacBook Pro's. Go to this site: EveryMac - Lookup plug in your systems S/N, then paste the systems URL here for us to see.

Once we know what you have we can guide you how to fix this.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having these issues. Do you have the results of your troubleshoot? NVRAM seems to not have corrected the issue, did Safemode work smoothly? Was there a result in the disk utility? Did you reinstall the OS?

The bigger question to assist too is What were you doing before you noticed the occurrence?

I was writing an email in Chrome. I only had gmail open. No other applications were running.

And I tried everything listed in that post I linked to. Nothing seemed to fix the problem.

Are your fans running fast all the time? If yes, you have a temp sensor issue probably on the HDD cable.

If no, you most likely have a hard drive and or hard drive cable issue. I would put my bets on this. You do not need a "Genius" at apple to do this for you. It is very easy. All you need is a phillips screw driver and a brain ;).

Check out this iFixit guide. I'd replace the hard drive and cable and it might me time to consider a new SSD instead of a traditional hard drive. You can get a SSD or traditional hard drive at best buy.

What does Mara need to do to prevent this cable from becoming damaged again?

- de

@mayer Not exactly sure. I usually don't except general repair jobs. Usually just boards. I have heard that slamming the lid too hard can damage the cable.

On the 2012 the cable gets damaged at the point where it climbs over that last step onto the optical drive. To prevent it I use Scotch Extreme mounting tape on either side of the cable to prevent the bottom case from hitting it.
