Flashing question mark problem

My laptop shut off because the battery was depleted. I plugged it and proceeded to turn it on, the same browser appeared with the different tabs I had earlier. It froze and wouldn't budge. I turned it off and tried turning it on again. This time it showed the flashing question mark on top of a folder, by reading through the forum I learnt that it meant that the laptop didn't find the file to boot from. I turned it off again and turned it on while holding command+R and it led me to internet recovery (where I had to choose a network) problem is that after I choose a network the laptop freezes or stays on the screen with the selected network and a globe. How can I fix it?

Some background, I changed the optical drive for an SSD (dual drive setup)

This could be several issues. The first know issue is the hard drive/IR cable failure. Apple was even replacing these for free for a while. Which bay did you put the new SSD drive in and which drive are you booting from?

I am booting from the SSD. I kept the HDD in the same place. I placed the SSD on a caddy and replaced the optical drive with it. Is it normal that it crashes while on recovery mode? The help is much appreciated

Try putting the SSD in the hard drive bay and booting with just one drive. Let us know what your results are.

You might have two different issues here. The first is some MacBook Pro's have a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) optical drive port. Here's a good reference: OWC Data Doubler it makes no difference who's you have as the issue is within the Mac's logic board.

The second issue you can face is the Apple HD does not have crash guard onboard so moving it over to the optical bay does put it at risk if you bounce the system while the drive is running. Only the HD bay has crash guard protection.

So for now leave the HD out and move the SSD over to the HD bay as @mayer recommended to test things out. That is if your SSD is your boot drive (which it should be).
