washer does not finish drain cycle

My washer has started to stop during the drain cycle. It sounds like the pump is running. When this happens, many times the door will not unlock. I have to unplug and replug the electric cord. Sometimes it works, other times, I have to do that several times before the cycle is complete.

Is there some kind of filter in the drain line that could be getting clogged?

My old washer wasn't emptying properly so i got a new one but this is doing the same. It does a wash but doesn't empty properly. What can i do?

Hi @ nicola willoughby,

Have you checked that the drain that the washer's drain hose is placed into is not partially blocked, preventing full flow of drain water?

- de

How do i do that?

- de

Hi @ nicola willoughby,

Where the washer's drain hose is inserted into a drain hole, remove the drain hose from the drain and then if you can pour some water into the drain and check that it flows away freely and doesn't build up and come back out

- de

No idea about washers only how to work them

Drain Pump

If the washer won't drain water the drain pump might be defective. It's also common for a small sock or other article of clothing to get caught in the drain pump or in the drain hose. Check both for an obstruction before replacing the pump.

Clogged Pump or Hose

If the washer won't drain there might be a clogged pump or hose. It's common for small socks or other small clothing items to get into the water drain system and clog the hose leading to the pump or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump in order to remove the article of clothing. Keep in mind that any water in the washer will pour out of the hoses when removed.

Our Kenmore Series 80 will not drain with pump prior to spin. It does spin and when it does it spins out the water and I can hear it going down the drain. I replaced the pump with a new one but that did not fix the problem. Washer runs fine but have to spin twice to get clothes dry enough to put in dryer. Could I have a bad timer that is missing the pump sequence?

I did pull the agitator and nothing in the holes under agitator and got clear water out of hoses when I pulled the pump and replaced it. I don't see how discharge could be plugged since water goes out the discharge when the washer spins. Any guidance on whether or not a timer could be the problem would be appreciated.

Hi,

My whirlpool top load washer doesn’t complete drain cycle because I can see water dripping out from my washed clothes. I have checked the drain it’s clean the pump is working fine any suggestions will be helpful thanks.

@Suhail Balishdaq ,

Has all the water been pumped out of the tub at the end of the drain cycle? Not what is on the clothes, what is left in the tub.

Does the washer then go to the spin cycle to remove any remaining water from the clothes or perhaps to a rinse cycle?

What is the make and model number of the washer?

Barry Howe, I would remove the drain plug from the filter at the water pump.

1. Take off the lower front panel.Remove the bottom front access panel just remove the 3 Torx screws on front bottom of machine. Slightly lift the panel and pull the bottom towards you

2. Turn the pump filter cover counter-clockwise by hand and remove. Place a bucket or pan underneath it since you will get the water spilling out of there. Removing the filter should remove all water from your washer.

FIXED!! thank you for the great info, and yes the drain filter held about $20 in change , 50 nuts and bolts and so so much more hahaha. Having someone hold the washer as you lean it back to gain access and then simply open the filter was helpful , could be a 2 person job or have somthing you can prop the washer up with

Cleaned the filter and the machine still will not drain. So that must mean the hose or pump is clogged. I did wash some rugs with rubble backing and the filter was clogged but ithe plug must go farther.

What does the code F21 mean on my kenmore elite smartwash Quietpack 4

- de

@Charleene Morris

What is the model number of the washer?

usually F21 means a suds problem or a drain pump problem (or a clog in the drain line). Check the drain hose for kinks or if it is clogged. Also if there is a filter (don't know your model) check that it is clean also

Hi @nicolawill,

You didn't state the make or model number of your washer but here's a video that shows the 3 different types of drain hose connection options that are common to all washing machines, top loaders and front loaders.

If you have the floor drain connection type ensure that it has a syphon break kit in the drain hose.

If the drain hose has not been installed correctly the washer will not fully drain.

Hi @nicolawill,

Check the drain where the washer's drain pipe goes into to make sure that it is not clogged and that the water flows away

- de

Hi @nicolawill,

If the washer drain hose goes behind the machine to get to the drain pipe then it will have to be moved to gain access to the drain pipe.

I have a Kenmore elite washer, Model # 417.41100000; Serial # 4C34503079 ...there is NO access panel! I think I will have to take off the entire right side panel to get to the drain filter or pump! I wish I had looked for a way to clean out this filter before buying it! The instructions say to clean out the filter once per month!!!

I have Kenmore 80 Series and it is not draining water out. my Washing machine is top load type. I googled and took some of the steps experts talked about. I checked the Hoses / Drain Pipe for any blockage - but there was none. I then checked the top cover switch and found it to be functional and in the end i thought it could be the Water Pump (the pastic piece that actually does not have motor in it - but works with Motor of the Washing machine. Anyhow after spending 50 Dollars -i still dont have a solution …… Any help / ideas may help me

note that the Rotation of Motor seems to be working (for washing - slow/fast etc ) - but water is not draining after doing the cleaning cycle….

Same problem. Did you ever find a solution

Same problem replaced pump still not draining prior to spin. It will spin and that pushes water out but pretty sure it should be pumping water out prior to spinning.

I replaced the pump twice and cleaned the filter and hose to the drain. But I still got a F02 code and notice the pump would continue going but nothing coming out of the hose. Then i replaced the Water level pressure switch (easy job) but still got an F02 code. I removed the top and back panel of the washer (easy process) and followed the rubber tubing from the Water level pressure switch to the back of the drum. I removed the little screw holding the plastic attachment to the tub and looked in the hole. The hole was plugged with a children’s sock. I scoped inside and found 3 more socks. I removed the drain hose coming from the drum (thick and short black accordion -like hose connecting the tub to the filter) and reached in there an pulled out another sock. It appears small articles get drained into this hose and get stuck. I removed the hose/filter/pump assembly and cleaned it all out and replaced. Machine runs like a charm now. The owners manual states to place small articles of clothing (children’s socks) into a garment bag when washing clothes. I cans see why. Those little buggers get sucked right down and get stuck in the drum hose going to the pump.
