HP Spectre x360 13t-4000 Troubleshooting
Released in 2015, the HP Spectre is a top of the line convertible laptop.
Device won’t power on
Device will not power on whenever the power button is pressed.
Battery is dead
The device may have not been charged in awhile or the battery just isn’t as good as it used to be. Batteries do lose the amount of charge they can hold over time. Plug your charger into your device and see if it will turn on then. If it does not turn on then there may have a severed connection to the battery not allowing the device to receive power.
A part may be loose
Sometimes a part can become loose from the device being moved around all the time. If this is the case you should check the connection to the RAM. To check those parts, remove the screws of the bottom lid of the device to access them. Once the bottom is removed, remove the RAM by releasing the pressure mounts located on the side of them and pull the RAM out. Make sure there is no dust or any particles that could interfere with the gold pins of the RAM. Once everything is all set, install the RAM again, reinstall the bottom lid and turn on the device.
There are conflicting devices
If there are any devices plugged into the laptop, they could be causing the laptop to boot incorrectly. To fix this, remove all devices and then turn on the laptop.
Motherboard is overheating
The device may be very hot to touch.
Using the device for a prolonged amount of time could cause it to overheat if there is not enough ventilation. Avoid materials that can block the ventilation, like blankets or other fabric, as they can quickly cause overheating. Consider cooling the device by using a USB powered laptop cooling pad.
The device is charging
While the device is charging, it runs warmer than normal. This can be compounded by using the device heavily while charging it. Try using the device sparingly while it is charging.
There is no dust filter located on the laptop when it intakes air. This could lead to dust and small debris clogging the vents and fan. Turn off the device and use a can of air to clear out any vents on the device. Then turn the device back on and see if it runs cooler.
Computer will not connect to Internet
The device is not able to access the internet’s features or functions.
Make sure that the internet is actually working by connecting another device to it. If a cellphone or other device is available, test the network with that device to determine if the problem lies within your device or the network.
Device Connectivity Issues
From your settings window, click on “Network & Internet” and then select the Network Troubleshooter. This will have the device test itself, and may come across an issue for you to resolve.
Wrong Network Adapter Enabled
From in the “Network & Internet” window, click on Change Adapter Options. This will bring you to a list of possible network adapters. Make sure, if you are using WiFi, that you are using the WiFi adapter.
Device drivers out of date
Try restarting the device, and check for updates for Windows. Follow this link to the HP device driver page and enter your device’s serial number. Follow the instructions to check if the drivers are up to date here. More often than not, a simple restart can also be the fix for an issue like this, as resets the state of most system processes.
Touchpad is not Responsive
There is no movement in the cursor of the laptop.
By double tapping in the upper left hand corner of your touchpad you can turn it on and off. If it is off, double tap the top left corner and it will make your touchpad responsive again.

Go to Windows settings and click on Ease of Access. Verify that the touchpad is not disabled. If the touchpad is disabled, make sure to enable it by selecting the feature that turns it on.
Touchpad device is disabled in device settings
In Windows settings, go to Devices, and then scroll down to click on “Devices and printers” and check if your device is visible. if not, right click and then click Device Manager. In the View drop down menu, click on “Show hidden devices”, and then navigate down to “Mice and other pointing devices” where you should find the laptop’s touchpad listed. Right click on your device’s touchpad and select “scan for hardware changes.” Then, in the same menu, click on update driver and then select “Search automatically for updated driver software”.
No Sound from speakers
Faint or no sound is coming from the laptop.
The application volume is muted or turned down
Check in the application you are playing audio through for volume controls. If the volume of the application is turned down, then no audio will come through your speakers, even if your system volume is turned all the way up.
The system volume is muted or turned down
Check to see if the light on the F11 key (located near the top right of the keyboard) is on. This is the mute key, and if the light is on, it means the audio is muted. To fix this, press the F11 key, or raise the volume by pressing the F10 key, which will raise the volume of the laptop. A volume bar should appear on the top left of the screen, indicating the current volume level of the laptop.
A device is plugged into the audio jack
If speakers or headphones are plugged into the laptop’s headphone jack, located on the right side of the device, the audio could be playing through those. If speakers are plugged in, make sure they are powered on and their volume is turned up. If headphones are plugged in, chances are the volume will not be loud enough to hear well unless you are wearing them.
The wrong audio device is selected
In the bottom right of the screen, right click on the speaker icon, and then click on “Open Sound Settings”. Verify that the output device selected is correct. The audio adapter selected should be the device’s built-in audio device, unless an external audio device is being used in alternative.
Out of date audio drivers
Follow this link to the HP device driver page and enter your device’s serial number. Follow the instructions to check if your drivers are up to date here. If the audio driver updates don’t fix the issue, restart the computer.
Loose connection or broken components
If nothing has fixed the issue so far, there may be a loose connection or broken components. We are currently working on our guides for these repairs, so you should seek professional help or wait for our guides before you try to fix it yourself.
The device won’t charge
Device’s battery level not increasing when charger is plugged in
The charger is not plugged in properly
Verify that the charger is connected completely to both your power outlet and your device. The charger should fit in snugly. Also verify that the outlet you are using has power by plugging in something simple like a lamp.
The charger is not supported by the device
Verify that the charger in use is the one that came with the device, or a certified replacement. While some other chargers may have the same plugs, they will not work with the device.
The battery is damaged, faulty, or seated wrong
If the battery was recently replaced, try charging the device with the old one back in. If not, then try removing the current battery and reinstalling it. Make sure to follow the proper steps for installing the battery, which a guide for will soon be available here.
The charger is broken
A broken charger can be inconvenient, but there are many resources for finding a good replacement. Make sure the replacement charger accepts your region’s necessary Input Voltage, and has an Output Voltage of 19.5 V.
The device’s charging circuit is broken
To fix this issue, the motherboard will have to be replaced, as the power/charging circuit is located on the device’s motherboard. A guide for replacing the motherboard will soon be available here.
