Acer Gateway Chromebook CBO314-1H Battery Not Holding a Charge
If your Chromebook only works when plugged in, follow these steps to troubleshoot your battery. If these options do not work, you will need to replace the battery.
Chromebook Not Responding to Power Properly
The system needs a hardware reset. While your Chromebook is on, press and hold the refresh button(top row 4th key from the left marked with a circular arrow) and power button for about 10 seconds. This allows the controller that handles power and charging to be reset hopefully fixing the battery not holding a charge. If this doesn't work follow the next troubleshooting step.
Battery Health is Degraded
To check this, turn on your Chromebook then click on the launcher(circle button) in the bottom-left corner. In the search bar type diagnostics and this will open the app. While in the app navigate to the system tab in the sidebar and look at the battery section. Then check the batteries health percentage, anything below 50% usually indicates the battery is no longer reliable, indicating you need a new battery. If this is above that check the battery status and if it says unknown the battery is likely disconnected and would need a more advanced troubleshooting listed below; or its completely dead indicating a new battery is needed. If the battery function appears normal, continue to the next troubleshooting step.
Internal Battery Connection Issue (Advanced – Requires Disassembly)
If the battery status in the diagnostics section showed 'unknown' the internal battery may be loose, disconnected, or not being detected by the system. This can indicate a hardware issue that requires disassembly of the Chromebooks back cover to inspect and reset the battery cable. If the battery status is anything other than “unknown,” continue to the next troubleshooting step.
To reset the internal battery you must remove the back bottom cover(10 screws); for a step by step guide on how to remove the back cover properly, refer to the "back cover removal guide"(LINK). Once the back cover is removed carefully disconnect the battery from the motherboard. Once it is disconnected hold the power button for about 30 seconds allowing it to drain the residual power. Then reconnect the motherboard back into the battery and reassemble the back cover.
After reconnecting the internal battery and reassembling the back cover, power it on. Recheck the battery status by opening the diagnostics app again. If the battery status shows normal and health percentage is visible and above the 50%, the issue has been resolved and your battery should function properly.
If the status still shows "unknown" this most likely means a permanent hardware failure requiring you to replace the battery or leaving it plugged in constantly.
Damaged or Faulty Charging Cable
Check the specifications of your current USB-C power cable it may not have enough wattage to sustain/charge your device. Before attempting more invasive fixes, such as replacing the battery, look for or buy another USB-C cable that is rated for 45W power output or better and see if your battery charges. Make sure that the LED next to the charging port lights up when plugged in. You can find the precise power specifications of your laptop by consulting its user manual or checking the sticker on the bottom. Look for something similar to +15V ⎓ 3A, 45W.
Defective Battery
If none of the above options work, your battery is no longer holding a charge and you will need to replace the battery. Go to our battery replacement LINK.
