To save time and effort, note that you don’t need to disconnect the antenna cable from the radio module. Just carefully lay the antenna plate / cable assembly over to the side and perform the SSD switch.
On the back of the MLB, below the graphics card socket, are 4 connections. While freeing the board, & as you tilt and lift it, gently rotate the whole assembly a bit less than 90˚ to the right, i.e. clockwise. This provides the slack needed to reach behind the board and disconnect them.
Should you want to completely remove the MLB (in order to repair a dead Graphics Card, for example) be sure to note the orientation of these 4 rear cables. During re-assembly, replace these in the same orientation. Otherwise there will be a tangle and you will experience problems getting the MLB back in place.
The infrared sensor can be unplugged from its connection on the MLB and removed from the case completely. Doing this makes it much easier to reposition the MLB after ‘surgery'.’
Full removal of the speaker is unnecessary - just very carefully unplug the two-conductor power button cable, which is routed through the groove along the edge of the speaker enclosure. Next, unfasten the two large torx screws holding the speaker enclosure to the chassis. Now you can easily scoot the speaker away from the drive mount - move it over just enough to reach the drive mount’s 2 torx fasteners beneath the edge of the speaker (a CM or two). There’s now enough room to easily remove and replace the drive assembly .
Been repairing Apple laptops on a regular basis for about 17 years now but this was my first ‘Retina Battery Adventure.’ As a long-experienced Apple tech, this really isn’t a very hard job. Just use the adhesive remover very carefully. It does all the hard work.
I bought iFixit’s ‘kit’, which turned out to be a great value; the replacement battery along with a spudger, precision tweezers, a syringe, a super-precision nozzle (for the syringe), small jar of adhesive remover (I think it’s just Acetone nail polish remover ), gloves, pry tool and pry pick, two pry cards, eye protection… oh, and a tool handle like the one in my iFixit universal toolkit, along with all the screwdriver bits required for the repair.
With all the extra pry tools and stuff, it looked like prep for a journey to the center of the earth or somethin’.... And hey, I was NOT disappointed when the job turned out to be waaay easier than implied by all the extra tooling. A nice collection of extra stuff for my kit! I now have two spudgers.
Wow.
