Technical Writer at iFixit
I’m Sam, but I go by “Samo” around the office to avoid confusion. I joined the Tech Writing team in August 2020!
Education
After graduating from Clear Lake High School in 2013 I moved to San Luis Obispo to major in Aerospace Engineering at Cal Poly. In the beginning of my sophomore year I learned about the ultimate secret to success—dropping out of college. Cal Poly’s motto at the time was “learn by doing,” so I decided to start doing more doing and the learning has always followed.
Experience
I was hired by iFixit in February of 2019 as a Warehouse Kitter to assemble repair kits before climbing aboard the Technical Writing team. As a Technical Writer I have created hundreds of iFixit guides for everything from smartphones to cement mixers.
Favorite Fixes
Bicycle repairs are the most satisfying of all to me. They are generally simple and once finished you can hop on and enjoy the fruits of your labor! My favorite fix of all time occurred during my first mountain bike race. My front derailleur cable snapped, leaving me stuck in a gear too small to race with. With a portable screwdriver I was able to reattach the cable, shift into a larger gear, and finish the race!
More About Sam Omiotek
I grew up in a beautiful, one-stoplight, bass-fishing town called Lakeport. All my life I’ve been interested in the sorts of machines that are an extension of the mind and body. Of particular interest to me are bikes that make me faster, computers that make me smarter, and instruments that make me . . . louder.
Currently I am a student pilot pursuing a lifelong dream of searching the skies for this so-called “limit.”

I haven't tested this! I will look into it. Good question.
I tested the procedure and found that these iMacs were similar enough that reshooting photos was not necessary. As noted in the introduction, some photos in this guide are from a different model and may contain slight visual discrepancies, but they won't affect the guide procedure.
What components will need to be transferred over will depend on the replacement screen you receive. Some come with everything, some don't. I reference the parts iFixit sells when writing guides, and this guide will be updated if necessary once we have these screens in stock.
Good catch, thank you. For this step we used an impact wrench and the bolt was able to turn independently of the crankshaft. If you don't have an impact wrench available, having a second person hold it steady with a bar clamp may also work.
Unfortunately, even if you disassemble your phone clean it in an ultrasonic bath, then replace the battery, you’d still have to be very lucky for it to power back on with data intact.
The OWC Aura drive you ordered is designed to fit Apple’s proprietary interface, and should work fine with your machine without the need for an adapter. Good luck with your repair!
Try gently tapping it on a soft but solid surface, like a wooden desk or window sill, to see if you can dislodge the S-Pen. Don’t tap it on anything hard like a glass table or a tile countertop.
It took me years to discover this – I had to share my knowledge with the world.
Hi Nicolas,
If the battery is properly connected to the logic board, then you most likely received a bad battery. If you purchased it from iFixit, I would reach out to customer service at 1 (866) 613-4948 and they will send you a new one.
Thank you!
Since there are signs of life when you turn on/charge the phone, but nothing on screen, here’s what I would try:
1. Disconnect the charger
2. Disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard
3. Disconnect the display cable from the motherboard
4. Reconnect the display cable
5. Reconnect the battery cable
6. Power on to test
If that does not fix it, another cable may not be properly connected. This sometimes prevents certain phones from powering on. Otherwise the display connector may have been damaged during the repair.
