Mi Problema

As my iPhone 5 nears 2 years of life in my hands, the battery has gradually gotten worse and worse to the point that the phone had been consistently dying before even reaching the 20% warning. So I decided to take action and replace the battery since I determined the problem was not software related using iFixit's own iPhone 5 Replacement Kit.

Mi SoluciĆ³n

I received my kit in the mail from iFixit about 3 days sooner than I had expected, which was nice. As could be predicted, I had a lot of difficulty getting the display away from the phone's "body." During that process the frame that locks the display in place actually separated on one side so that pulling with the suction cup only further separated the 2 pieces and eventually part of the frame actually buckled. Once into the phone everything went smoothly until it was time to pull out the battery, which I can only safely assume was glued down with the same type of adhesive used on the space shuttles. Once everything was back in place, it took nearly an hour to finally get the mangled frame/display arrangement to fit back in place. From the outside, you would have no idea that a repair had ever even been done because everything eventually fit back in and I'm very pleased with the result. The only thing that has left me upset is that I now have no use of my volume buttons. The mute switch works fine, but pressing on the volume buttons (+ & -) yields nothing. Unfortunately, I am afraid that pulling back the screen again to figure out what is wrong will only lead to more damage (possibly irreparable) to the bracket assembly.

Mi Consejo

Since the battery was glued in so well, I ended up prying against some things that the iFixit guide probably advised against and my guess is that I nicked a piece of the flex cable responsible for the volume buttons. My advice is to take it slowly and not get frustrated with the battery, and make sure if the adhesive is holding to heat up the back of the phone until the battery begins to peel back easier.
