Difficult

Mi Problema

We were on the 3rd Xbox and all had red rings of death. The extended warranty was finally up and I didn't want to pay for a repair that would cost almost as much as a new system. The $30 ifixit kit was worth the gamble. Our Xbox is now working again.

Mi SoluciĆ³n

The case was the most difficult thing to take apart. It is worth it to buy the kit just for the case removal tool. I'm experienced with electronics from way back, built Heathkit stereos and radios 30 years ago and several computer systems recently. Once I got the motherboard out it was easy to install the kit and replace the heat sink screws and new heatsinks. The kit comes with a T10 Torx driver but it is more like an allen wrench style and not a screwdriver. I already had a true T10 Torx screwdriver much easier to use than the one supplied.

Mi Consejo

I did the complete reflow operation that is recommended. The first time I tested the system I still had RRoD. If you get this don't give up. Remove the CPU and GPU heatsinks and start over. Even after the 2nd try I still had RRoD. I tried the old method of wrapping the system up for 1 hr while it is running. While it was still warm but unplugged I tightened all the heatsink screws again. This did the trick. Evidently I didn't give the system a full solder reflow or didn't have a good thermal contact between the heatsinks and the CPU/GPU.
