Original battery was down to maybe 80% capacity and the phone would often overheat while plugged in. You know, the usual iPhone woes. No need to call the wambulance or anything, just order a battery from iFixit!
Two minutes, cover open, old battery out, new battery in.
Graphic details: remove two screws, slide and lift a piece of glass, and remove two more screws and a metal clip to replace a battery, then reverse order to reassemble, Bang. Dead. Done.
It really was that easy. If you complain about this review due to graphic content, I completely understand. It's normal to be frightened by surgery performed on delicate electronics, but it's okay; take a deeeeep breath, and you too can replace your "non-replaceable" iPhone battery without forking over $199 to Apple.
Yes: if you cannot manage to remove two screws, slide and lift a piece of glass, and remove two more screws and a metal clip to replace a battery, then reverse order to reassemble, then you do not have the mental capacity to even use a web browser, so you very likely would not be reading this review.
If you can use a web browser and read this review, you have the ability to follow the howto here to replace the battery. What's holding you back?
I ordered the battery through ifixit because I knew the battery would be correct and manufactured recently, whereas most of the batteries on a certain site named after a river basin have a metric ton of bad reviews. And hey - free pentalobe driver (which I didn't need) and spudger (I have like a million of them but one more never hurt!).
It is also worth noting that the end result is a battery which on the 5th or 6th charge is 1428mah, which is beyond the stated design capacity of the cell. Initially capacity tested at around 1350mah but I've come to expect less capacity until a battery has been cycled a few times. Needless to say I am very pleased: so far battery life is great, and when I do run it while plugged in, it seems to run a lot cooler now. I have no complaints.
Oh - and no electric eels or machetes were required for repair. I used them because they are fun, and performing any task is always made more excited by performing them in a dimly-lit nuclear submarine. I highly recommend all of the above for ifixit customers!
