Mi Problema

After owning a 60GB Playstation 3 for over 4 years, the PS3 finally crashed while playing a game and refused to turn on anymore.

Mi SoluciĆ³n

The repair went as plan. I waited about 30 minutes before touching the motherboard after reflowing the solder, this was probably overkill but I wasn't taking chances. I ended up having to reflow the solder twice. The first repair lasted 1 night. After redoing the entire repair, the PS3 was working for the duration of the day which I then took the opportunity to transfer all the data off of it and onto a new PS3. While the ifixit repair may fix your issue, consider any more usage of your YLOD PS3 borrowed time.

Mi Consejo

The guide as provided on ifixit does a good job at describing the necessary steps to take apart the PS3, please note that the original 60GB PS3s will require some alternations. For example, the card reader is attached to the inside casing and you will need to unscrew the two screw holding it from the motherboard assembling before the casing will lift off. Carefully lift away the casing and watch for the ribbon connecting the card reader to the motherboard, carefully disconnect the ribbon from the card reader before setting the casing aside. I also didn't bother to remove the motherboard battery from motherboard casing, just unplug its connection to the motherboard. Lastly, give it a good minute to allow the heat gun to warm up. You want to make sure you are heating the motherboard enough.
