Moving an old PS3 to a new location and then running it whilst lying flat was obviously too much for it to cope with, so it simply refused to play any more! All that the unit did was flash a yellow light . Death has arrived......
Mi Solución
Bought the YLOD kit, followed the instructions and after about 2 hours of deconstruction, cleaning, heating and reconstruction I now have a re-invigorated and fully functional PS3. The process is shown as "difficult" in the iFixit guide, but it was all very straightforward. Not difficult at all.
Mi Consejo
Looking at the website of the thermal paste manufacturer I noticed they mention that it can take up to 25 hours for the paste to become fully functional. So the PS3 is being run for short periods until the thermal paste is working at it's best to try and make sure further breaks in the solder don't occur. I'll report back to let everyone know how it works out.
