iPod Classic 160gb Faceplate Replacement

nekojosh -

Mi Problema

I had my Ipod classic for several years and the screen had not been protected, so much time moving around in my pocket had causes the screen to get scratches to the point it became annoying to I decided to replace the faceplate. Got an original faceplate from ebay and thought about taking the Ipod to the MacStore... when I got there they wouldn't do the change because the part was adquired through other means, when I asked them if they had the part, they said they didn't bring that part... So yeah, they didn't help me with my part nor provided me the part... I found later that week that there was a third party store that could do the job so I figured I'd give them a try. The agreed to perform the service but when I was about to leave the iPod for service they told me it would cost me around 65 to 70$ I was angry because I felt I was being ripped off. I had already seen the disassembly guide here in iFixit so i had more or less of an idea of what was needed to be done I just didn't have the tools.

Frustraded after feeling that everyone from MacStore and the other third party were being idiots I sat in my car grabbed my phone and jumped straight to the iFixit website were I placed my order for the required tools. I felt like it was something personal at that point, I knew it didn't have to be so hard as long as you had the right tools.

Mi Solucion

Well... I must say, the iPod is well built, it was tought to open it, I broke both of my plastic opening tools in the process good thing I had already made enough space to insert the Putty knife. Once the back was separated from the faceplate it was smooth sailing thanks to the guide. Good my faceplate replaced, my iPod now looks brand new and the damaged to the back was minimum,. Awesome experience.

Mi Consejo

Don't buy JUST 2 plastic opening tools, they tend to break fairly easily. A good idea is to use the metal spudger point side or the putty knife to make the plastic tools slimmer on the tip making then able to get into the minuscule gap between the back and front covers of the iPod
