My wife put a DVD our PS3. Everything was working fine for first 3 min. Then it happen... the YLOD. I didn't know about YLOD then , I at first thought it had over heated. I had just built some shelves and thought that the air flow had been disrupted. However, alittle research revealed the YLOD. Now for my second problem... The DVD was a rental! I again researched the DVD problem and found out how to remove the disc drive and how to disassemble the drive and remove the DVD.
The repair went smooth. I watched the video first then followed the instructions. On my PS3, I had to remove the power supply before I could remove the Power switch. This was due to the wire rout that they had used when installing the switch.
The only thig I would add to the instruction would be the heat gun temp. I have an variable temp heat gun so I ordered the international kit. I looked on line at the model of heat gun that come with the kit and discovered that the low setting of the heat gun was 550 degrees. I wish I had taken pictures of the DVD drive removal. The advice I have there is after you remove the cover on the drive, take a picture of the drive for refrence. All the gears are on a spring system and retracts when it is lifted off. The photo is a good refrence. It took me 1-1/2 hrs to get right. I had the gears in the unloaded position and the cariage in the loaded.
