Battery failing causing the screen to black-out at 96% charge.

Replaced battery. 82 years of arthritis in my hands, progressing much faster in the last 10 years, suggested I ask my son to replace the battery. I sent the 3GS and your kit and where to go on the Internet for instructions to do the work, and the change went about easily. Son reported only that the hair dryer was needed to remove the old battery. New battery seemed flaky at first, changing percent of charge with great swings. It settled down after a few days of use and a few recharging. Glad to have a phone again.
