Mi Problema

I've been very happy with the refurbished MacBooks (1st generation Core 2 Duos) which my wife & I had gotten at Christmas (so we could finally ditch Windows :). I decided I wanted the convenience of an additional AC adapter, and bought a 3rd party unit.

I can't be sure that was the culprit, but after using it for a week or so my MacBook stopped charging the battery (or even running on AC).

Mi Solucion

I was already familiar with the iFixit guides, having used them to disassemble and swap parts between a couple of iBooks. After Googling the symptoms to see what the problem might be, I ordered a Magsafe board from iFixit.

We were getting ready to leave to spend Easter with family, so I was concerned about the timing of the order. But it shipped promptly, and arrived quickly. Everything went smoothly and within about an hour of sitting down to start the repair I was back up & running again - the day before we had to leave.

Mi Consejo

First, don't be afraid to go for it. Take your time. Lay out your work area, make sure it's well lit and that you have anything you need (glasses, magnifier, etc.) to see well.

Make sure you have some way to organize the screws as they are removed. I've used envelopes, baggies & small plastic recloseable food containers. The main thing is to label which step the screws come from. I have found that you can easily consolidate screws from 2 or 3 adjacent steps providing they're different enough (e.g. the long screws from the back cover together with the tiny screws from inside the battery compartment).

For this particular repair I found the most challenging part was just how fiddly the shielding is around the I/O and power ports. Observe carefully how it comes out. Take your time getting the metal fingers lined up, and don't hesitate to stop, remove and retry (as I did) the installation of the shield.

I rarely if ever write reviews - but I'm very grateful to iFixit. Thanks to the excellent guide (love the annotated photos & descriptions of the screws including lengths & diameters), things couldn't have been easier.

Thanks iFixit!
