removing cross threaded screw in MBP case

Gregory Gehr -

Mi Problema

When putting the screws back into my 15" Retina MBP (2012) after upgrading the SSD, I cross threaded one screw, and then stripped the head trying to remove it. I had a battery replacement scheduled for next month, and was not going to be able to do it if I did not get the cross threaded screw out!

Mi SoluciĆ³n

I bought both the Precision Screw Extractor Set for $19.99, and the Screw Extracting Pliers / Small for $19.99. The screw extractors were not initially able to remove the cross threaded screw with a stripped head, but after I used the special pliers to loosen the screw a partial turn, the extractors were able to bite into the stripped screw head and remove the screw the rest of the way.

Mi Consejo

I am leaving the cross threaded and stripped screw out of the bottom case of my Macbook Pro, the other nine screws will do a fine job holding on the case. There were some minor scratches right around the screw hole from using the pliers, but they are very minor, and worth it to get the screw removed!
