I've had this first generation XBOX360 since it first came out. Somehow, I've avoided the RROD all this time and it finally gave in. I'm too cheap to buy a new one when I know I can fix it for a small investment of time.
Just a theory, but maybe mine lasted this long because I've always kept it vertical instead of horizontal...
Overall, the fix went great, but took a bit longer than I expected since I wasn't quite as prepared to remove the old dielectric grease as I thought I was. I do have to say that I'm an Electrical Engineer by trade, but by no means do you need to be one to do this fix. However, it does help me have confidence in doing this work. So anyways, I ripped into it and had it put back together in a couple of hours. Turned it on and everything has been fine for almost a week now.
I bought the RROD Fix Kit and if I wouldn't have had it I for sure would have broken something. Also, make sure you're not doing the fix when they plan to do maintenance on the website. It happened to me, but luckily they provide links to .pdf copies. However, I was at the stage of the install for the small heat sinks and I had no idea in which direction to install them because the pictures were too small and blurry. Good thing YouTube exists and I found their short video of the fix on there and could see how to install them.
