Battery failed.

Getting the back cover off was not easy; it took a great deal of prying and sliding the "spludgers" along the seam. Probably committed an error as both of the push buttons on the end of the cover came loose. I used sticky tape to hold them in place during reassembly.
Did not use hot glue to secure the battery. I found the idea of hot stuff and the LCD screen a bit intimidating; I used double sidied tape instead. We'll see how that holds up with time.
Note on the "new" battery: The only source I found for a new one offers them only in batches of 10. Had to settle for a used one on Ebay; we'll see how long it lasts.
