Mi Problema

One of the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" speakers went bad and needed replacement.

Mi SoluciĆ³n

I followed a teardown video I'd found. It was somewhat detailed but lacked a few facts. Using the actual repair/replacement guide alongside the video went well.

Mi Consejo

In breaking down the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" to replace a malfunctioning speaker, I ran into a thing or two worth a mention. First, in taking off the top plastic trim piece, which is the first step in taking about your kindle, you have to look out on where you place your pry tool. The trim piece is held on with a few small tabs on either side and is kept in place with double-sided adhesive tape. When using the pry tool (plastic tool, please!) you have to be careful around the CAMERA'S FLASH LENS located right off center. There is an actual flash lens ON THE TRIM PIECE ITSELF which you need to avoid with your pry tool. Work your way on either side of the the location of the flash and you should be fine. One of the above images shows how far you should go with the pry tool from that side. Next, start at the opposite edge of the trim piece and work your way in towards the camera. The trim piece should come off easily. Work slowly and methodically as the trim piece is quite thin and won't put up with any rough handling.

There are FOUR t5 screws under the trim piece. A few might be hidden under the adhesive tape. They need to be removed. There are two tabs that have to be unlocked at this point before removing the screen. "Pop" them gently and move on to the screen removal.

Using your pry tool, carefully pry the screen away from the body of the kindle. That is, you actually have to insert the pry tool at the FRONT of the kindle where the screen is inserted in the kindle's body.

It is a little confusing on which speaker is left and which is right. For clarification the speakers are labeled LEFT and RIGHT depending on which side you need to replace WHEN FACING THE KINDLE FROM THE FRONT. When you are facing the screen, even though the speakers are on the REAR OF THE BODY, the orientation is as you face it.

COMPATIBILITY: In purchasing my replacement speakers there was a question of which speaker was left, which was right. And also the compatibility. The listing stated the speakers were for the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" 3rd Gen APOLLO model. I have the SATURN model. The only difference, as far as I know, is that the processor is different, everything else SHOULD be compatible. The Apollo Kindle has a 2.2GHz processor whereas the Saturn has a 2.5GHz processor. As suspected and confirmed when the speakers arrive, both the Apollo model and Saturn model parts are compatible. Makes sense....there shouldn't be a parts difference other than the processor. (much like the shift knob should be the same no matter if you have a 1.9 liter engine or the 2.2 liter of the same year, make, and model)

Lastly, make sure you have the proper tools. They make ALL the difference. For under $10 shipped you can pick up a full set of small electronics tools. It's well worth the price to make sure everything goes smoothly.
