Aquatic iPhone Charging Fail

Difficult

Mi Problema

My iPhone got a glass of water over it (must have bumped it while asleep) and water settled on the charge plug for a number of hours. The pins on both plug and connector turned very green, which I somewhat cleaned with a toothbrush but eventually one of the connector pins broke off, and charging ceased to work altogether. I needed to fix my iPhone!

Mi SoluciĆ³n

I found iFixit.com, they had the parts and the tools. I got the recommended Spludger, opening tools and #00 screwdriver (didn't need the pentalobe driver) and the new connector part. Following the dire warnings of skin oils on the screws killing reception I bought some gloves from the supermarket for the operation too. What I didn't get was good lighting and a clean workbench.

The step by step guide had all the gotchas, except that the little screws have a habit of flying out of tweezers and into the carpet. Two screws had me on all fours for a couple of minutes looking for them. There was also a note to watch for a rubber spacer under the camera plug, which I never saw, so made up a spacer by layering tape in what I imagined was the correct place! Please move the warning to watch for it before the instruction to remove the camera! I took the precaution to keep the screws in the order they came out, so they all went back in the right place.

While fiddly, the instructions are pretty complete and with patience and steady hands and good vision the job can be done.
