All air cooled small engines use a fan on one end of the engine and a fan housing designed to force air cooling onto the finned cylinder head to provide cooling. Without the cooling shroud, the engine will overheat. When replacing the spark plug, use only the recommended plug as plugs have a heat range; a longer center ceramic 'nose' retains heat while a shorter nose dissipates heat quicker to the finned aluminum cylinder head.
