How would I extract files from a broken laptop?

There is something wrong with my laptop and I want to extract my files from it (IE music, pictures and Photoshop PSD files and brushes).

My laptop will turn on but won't bring me to the home screen; instead it will bring me to an error screen claiming that something must be unplugged before I can try safe mode or something or other. There isn't anything connected to my laptop except for the charger so I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean.

Anyway... could I use a hard drive adapter or some how transfers those files to an external hard drive ? Any information is helpful! Thanks.

Edit: I have a Sony VAIO with Windows Vista.

Vina, there is a couple of things that you can try. First, I would check the BIOS, and set the start up sequence to CD rom. Get a LINUX Live CD i.e Puppy Linux which should allow you to access your computer and copy your files to an external drive i.e. USB drive. The other thing that you can try, is to start from your OS CD and repair your current version. You did not tell us which computer or OS you are using, so that makes it a bit of a guessing game. You can also remove your hard drive and plug it into a different computer via an adapter i.e. SATA -USB etc depends on what HDD you have.

Its bit techi to do this but still by following the instruction you can achieve your purpose.

First you need to turn over your laptop and your will see like 2 or 3 different covers with screws. Check which screw has a hard drive icon. Just open the screw and use screw drivers to open your hard drive further. Once your detach it the check if its IDE or SATA.

After this you need to get a SATA to USB or IDE to USB converter. You can order it online for few bucks or can also get it from some hardware shop. Once you get this converter then attache it with connector and then further with your PC via USB. In this way you would be able to manually back up all your data from all folders one by one.
