Weak GPS, weak UMTS Internet

Dear all,

Since I replaced my screen on my iphone 4 I am experiencing issues with GPS reception and UMTS Internet.

Sometimes GPS seems to work fine, but more often it completely dislocates me a few hundred meters of my actual position.

Also, UMTS Internet (e.g. through MP3 streaming or Webbrowsing) seems to be weaker than before.

Wifi on the other hand still seems to work perfectly.

Do you have any idea what could be the cause for this problem? I checked the screws on the antenna cover (from Weak GPS Signal Signal) but all the screws are in the right place. Do you think that putting the PCB in the oven could fix my problem?

Thank you for your help!

Best wishes,

Karl

Karl,

The grease from your fingers is enough to interfere with the signals of the iPhone, that would affect your cellular and wifi connection too! (however the interference isn't affecting the wifi which is likely)

The iPhone doesn't just have GPS, it has A-GPS, with the A standing for Assisted that helps stream down the sync files from the satellite a lot quicker, it could be that the dodgy cellular connection is affecting the sync packages to your iPhone as they take a little longer to be processed. If it takes just the tiniest of time to process, with the speed of light being very quick, it will throw you hundred of metres away, sometimes more!

I would heavily suggest using a degreaser, cotton buds, GLOVES! To clean the inside of your iPhone where metal touches metal. That will and should solve things for you.

Hope this helps!

Ashley.

Dear Ashley,

Thank you so much for your advice!

You suggested to clean inside where metal touches metal. Does that mean that I need to completely disassemble the phone or can I focus on specific areas? Could I e.g. follow any of the disassembling guides from (iPhone 4) and focus on specific parts/steps?

Thank you very much!!

Karl

Karl,

Yes I would definitely start with just the specific parts as mentioned in the guide but you might as well do as much as you can. The metal contacts right at the top and bottom are the ones you will need to focus on.

I would take out obviously the battery but also the logic board and speaker assembly. That will be your best bet and if the problem keeps occurring, you need to keep cleaning more parts through more disassembly.

It's totally up to you, the more you are prepared to disassemble and clean then the higher the chances of resolving your problem. If I was in your Sandles though, I would focus right at the top and bottom.

Hope this helps!

Ashley.

Hi Ashley!

This is just a short status update - I disassembled the phone following the guide for changing displays and cleaned as much as I could. I think I should have read the guide more thoroughly the last time, cause it actually states which parts need to be degreased before reassembly. ;)

I believe that the performance improved now!

I am still experiencing the issue of having a dislocated GPS position some times - but the overall performance is good enough - so I can live with that. :)

Thanks so much for your help!
