Can I swap my preinstalled drives?

Hey!

I bought a MacBook Pro 13'' 2012, and I'm coming from a 2009 one.

I want to use my SSD in my new MacBook too.

Can I move my drive directly, or do I have to reinstall OS X and transfer the files?

Are the drivers already included in OS X 10.7.4, or does it download the drivers when running Software Update?

I don't want to restore… :)

Thanks!

Maybe this is confusing: My question is software related, not hardware!

I am talking about transferring a Samsung SSD 830 from a 2009 13'' MacBook Pro to a 2012 13'' MacBook Pro Non-Retina! The question is just this: Do I need to reinstall OS X (because of the drivers not being included in my current 10.7.4 install), or can I just transfer the drive?

I tried and - no.

Grey screen with crossed circle.

The Ivy Bridge drivers are not included in the standart 10.7.4 updates, you can wait for 10.7.5 or you'll have to reinstall.

I swap drives all the time and it always works. When you start up a foreign drive the boot time is a bit longer but you should be alright. I have a bunch of test disks with systems on that i use for troubleshooting and never ran into problems.

There hasn't been an update for Lion since the new models came out, so the Ivy Bridge drivers can't be included in my current 10.7.4 version.

I read that the new MacBook Pro non-Retinas come with a special build to include the drivers.

I now that swapping drives usually works, but even if the drivers aren't included? Pretty unsure.

oops, sorry - machead is right, of course. The 2012 unit uses a "card" SSD. It's not compatible with standart 2.5" SATA drives.

I am talking about the 13'' model! Not the Retina model!
