Your machine has the GeForce 8600M GT GPU which is the exact one that nVidia had to pay for in the class action law suit. Apple lied or the tech did not know his stuff. Apple should repair this for free. If they don't please come back and will direct you to the precedent set by a small claims court. Also their own web site: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

As of this date, other users on this site have reported that Apple is still repairing this problem for free.

You most likely have a failing graphics card on your MacBook Pro. These models are known for having a graphics card failures which can cause graphical artifacts and booting problems. Your best bet is to take it into the Apple store and have them determine if it is still covered under the Nvidia recall. If it is within 4 years of the purchase date then Apple will replace it free of charge.

Hope this helps.

I had a MacBook Pro that was two months out of the 4 year period that had this problem. I took it to an Apple genius to see if they would still honor it and I was originally told no. I then explained to them how I was an avid apple user and i was becoming disappointed in the lack of support on a well know problem. Then the store manager came out and after talking for a while agreed to replace mine free of charge. All it took was a little convincing. Since that I have had 4 more of my MacBook Pros fail from the same problem but they were luckily still under the 4 year recall. It was pretty funny to walk into the store carrying 4 pros and tell the apple genius that they all failed from the Nvidia problem. The guy said he didn't know that the problem was so bad.

I think I have this same problem with my 17" MBP.

But I also can't boot off a CD (OSX disk nor Disk Warrior). The machine just spits the disk back out. Is that because the video card is toast, and the machine won't allow any activity???

Is the inability to boot from a CD a known issue relating to the faulty video board?

Since no one has commented on that, I need to ask again. I've searched this site for that info, and found little usable information about such.
