Why doesn't my screen work?

When I open my macbook the screen will not light up. I have to play around with closing/opening it a little and sometimes it will light up. I'm guessing the problem is the backlight so do I need a new cord connecting it to the screen or do I just need a whole new screen?

I have the same problem. Have a macbook pro retina 13-in mod 2014. Tried all the resets and command option pr and sleep then turn off and on again. Nothing worked. I can see the screen on an external monitor or with flashlight.

Susan, I suggest you start a new question as this one was from 2012 on a much older machine. Your model will have entirely different solutions.

Which model Macbook do you have? The first step is to try and reset your SMC, you can do so by following the directions below;

Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove

Shut down the computer.

Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.

Remove the battery.

Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.

Release the power button.

Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.

Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

Shut down the computer.

Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

If this does not resolve the issue then the problem is most likely hardware related. The resolution will depend on which model you have. Earlier Macbook models have an inverter inder the clutch cover which converts the power for the backlight, if this fails then you will not see any light but you can still see the `screen` when a light is shining on the screen. If you get the light to come on by moving the screen around then this could possibly be resolved by reseating the cable. If your model of macbook is newer then the screen will be LED and no longer have an inverter. This could then be a faulty Logicboard or screen.

Do you know which Macbook you have?

Regards,

Wes

If you give us the last three figures of your serial number we can tell which machine you have.
