N64 Powers On, No Output, Voltage Tests OK

Background:

A client brought me his N64; his little kid broke the yellow plug of his composite cables at the TV, and now the console won't output at all (lamp on, no video, no audio).

Testing:

I've tested it with multiple cables and can confirm the issue. Gone through the following steps:

  • Cleaned inside and underneath the cartridge slot connector;
  • inspected all pins of each IC;
  • cleaned and tested continuity of AV port pins
  • Tested voltage at 12V and 3.3V rails
  • Tried different expansion/jumper paks
  • inspected capacitors
  • Tested voltage at each pin of the AV port (except RGB & Sync which tested 0 of course because it's not a modded system)

All tests were OK. Not sure where to test further. I'm leaning towards a combination of recapping (which I would've done anyway) and a new cartridge connector. Any ideas?

Hi there!

I think a recap isn’t a bad idea. It’s good to do this anyway! Replacing the pin connector is a goid 2nd step. If all of those things didn’t worked, then it must be something around the AV port..

Please let us know how it goes!

It turns out, it was the client's aftermarket (no-name, of course) power supply.

I opened up my own N64 and swapped cartridge connectors to see if the client's would work on my console, and vice versa. To save time, I just used my PSU to test both consoles. When both consoles worked, that's when it hit me.

I had ruled out the PSU because it appeared I was getting the voltage I needed; apparently not.

Ah interesting! Never expected that this could be the culprit. Thanks for letting us know!!

Hopefully, the multilayer PCB is not going to be a problem.

I would start at the output and retrace using a Oscilloscope to find the video sync signals.
