I have a iMac 21.5 with a intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3470S 2.90GHz and I’m still not sure what i7 I should replace it with, and I’m wondering if a “Intel Core i7-4770S” would work well with it.

You are limited to the CPUs Apple used in this series as the firmware will only work within the given CPU family. So the best you can go with is a 3.1 GHz Core i7 (I7-3770S) Ivy Bridge.
Depending on what apps you are using the added thread services might not offer any sizable improvement, besides the slight clock improvement.
