My phone screen stopped working the blacklight turns on and I had it repaired and they said it's a problem with the motherboard and not the LCD ribbon. So my question is can the motherboard be swapped for a new one?

If you're asking if you can replace the motherboard from your Droid 2 with another Droid 2 motherboard, the answer is yes. The only thing you'll have to keep in mind is that anything you had saved to your phone's internal memory will be gone. If you're asking if you can take the motherboard from a different model of Droid, the answer is unfortunately no.
