Hi, Can anybody suggest an alternative remedy. I replaced the hard drive on my 1st gen Apple TV as I was told it would almost certainly the hard drive. After ordering one and fitting it, I still have the orange flashing light.!!!
Any other ideas what it might be ?

1. unplug unit
2. after 1 minute plug back in and hold the menu and button for 3 seconds.
(unit should reboot and go into recovery mode)
3. In recovery mode, run diagnostics and if passed then perform factory resotre.
4. Problem should be resolved - resync with iTunes, run updates

Thanks Machead3. I've tried that but it is still flashing orange.
Two reported causes: - failed apple update, failed logic board. You know if you did the update. . . if you can put the HD in an external case or different machine you might be able to wipe the drive and start over. Good Luck,

This might help, worked for me:
I opened up the Apple TV and popped out the Button-Cell battery for about 10-15 seconds. Verified it still had a 3V charge, and replaced it. Booted back up and after 10 seconds, held down the Menu and - button to get to diagnostics and it worked. Said nothing wrong and continued booting. Hope this helps!

Just an addition... I tried this and it didn't work. However, I was using a Logitech Harmony remote. Since it operated the Apple TV just fine, I figured it would work for the reboot process. It didn't. However, when I dug up the Apple remote it then worked and now my Apple TV is fine.
