Strange bubble on MacBook Pro NVIDIA chipset - is it normal?

Block Image

symptoms : my old macbook pro stop to work after a hard day of work it was hot as !!@! and when i tried to turn it ON i heard the boooom from apple boot sound and then no screens ... the screens remain black. i thought it was a graphic card pb as it wasn't under warranty i bought a new one.

as i have the opportunity to have the same logic board fo free i decided to swap it.

in attach there is a picture of the NVIDIA chipset i think it is dead as there is a bubble sign on it can you confirm from this picture that the problem is really the graphic card that burned ?

if yes i will do the swap if not i will put everything to the garbage.

thx by advance for your answer!!!

ps: your home toolkit is AWESOME !! i took off the logic board in 20 minutes great tools and topic

You're going to have to replace the GPU; this one is toast. Reflowing doesn't work long term, so it's best if you just get it replaced.

When you put the system back together to take the system in so you can get it fixed under the repair program, you will need to apply thermal paste so Apple can't readily tell you were in there. Since Apple uses cheap silicone paste that barely works, it's best if you do the same for appearance purposes. I'm sure Apple isn't concerned, but it's better to take precautions and take the available excuses away from them.

If you decide to sell the system for parts, it's best if you sell the parts individually (Just don't sell the hard drive!). You will make more off the machine in pieces then you will as an intact system with a bad GPU. The motherboard isn't good for much without a new GPU, but it can be used for parts or repair. Ideally you should also clean the heatsink and fans with canned air to make them ready for the new buyer to use, but this isn't required.

@Nicksmacan: so the picture you see is the picture of the Broken macbook pro so you confirm my doubt the Nvidia chispet is dead and can't be fix using a heat fan.

The motherboard i will have for free come from a macbook pro which is working perfectly, so no doubt that it will work.

I'm not going to sell parts i want to fix it as i don't have to buy a new logicboard :)

@nicksmacandpchelp: I finished the logicboard SWAP !!!!! so my mac was a A1226 and the ogicboard i received for free by a friend was a A1260 the only diference so far is 1 screw hole on logical board. i reinstalled LION without any problem YEAAAAAH

my only concern is i don't know if i plugged the fan cables correctly ... oups AHAH

i will unmount the the mac again to double check this cause during the install phase the mac was hot but FANs didn't go full speed. i will maybe also try with a manual fan control program to test if they work correctly.

i'm not putting this question as solved since the FAN question is not solved.

i keep you posted.

thx for all your answers.
