No operating system? Internet recovery doesn't work for Lion

Macbook 17' 2011 A1297

On power up it goes to the question mark. So when I boot up in recovery, the install new copy of lion won't download. says missing components.

It shows 128 gb ssd on the left and the base system, under idisk on the left.

I took my 160 gb out of my other old MacBook and it boots up just fine. I haven't used or booted it up since 2017 so everything is very out of date and safari won't open any web pages. so I don't even know where to go next on updating from a somewhat working operating system.

where do I go from here? I feel like I'm overthinking the solution since its been so long since I've done anything hardware related to my Macs

You are likely hitting two different issues. First is getting to the highest OS this system supports. So if we look at EveryMac listing of this system we can see High Sierra (10.13) is the last supported version.

This series does have an odd optical drive SATA port so you can’t install a SATA III (6.0Gb/s) drive the best you can install is a SATA II (3.0Gb/s) drive so watch your self.

Reference: 2011 17” MacBook Pro

So leveraging your other Mac create a bootable OS installer thumb drive. Down load the installer from here How to download and install macOS and follow these directions to convert a Mac formatted thumb drive Create a bootable installer for macOS

Then using it to boot up you should be able to prep the drive using Disk Utility and install the OS. Do take note the system will reboot a few times as it will also upgrade your systems firmware and it may need to do this twice. In the end you should see the welcome screen.

^^^ This is what has a somewhat functioning Lion os on it, no boot issues

^^^ This is what was in it when it was given to me. But not 512.

I will also try your suggestions above when I'm off work! Thank you! And I could be back with more questions!

Here’s the spec sheets for the two drives:

- Western Digital WD1600BEVT

- TEAMGROUP GX2 SSD

The Western Digital drive is a SATA II (3.0Gbps) the TEAMGROUP SSD is a SATA III (6.0Gbps).

This explains why it won’t work as it’s too fast for your system. As an example here’s a SSD that will work in your system Samsung 850 EVO SSD note the interface line lists all three as supported! We call these drives as Auto Sense both of your drives are Fix Speed

If the drives spec sheet only lists one SATA speed that is all it will work in for a system which is slower! The standard was written so older drives needed to work in newer faster systems. The only exception is Auto Sense drives!

So I think my newest issue is creating a bootable drive from my M1 air for this 2011 pro. when I try to do the first command in terminal it says command not found.

@jodyholden - Do you have a friend with an older Mac? The newer M series systems macOSs have a few glitches so I would try to find an Intel system with an older macOS on it.
