Why won't my screen turn on?

I have an old 2ds and when I plug it up the blue light comes on but the screen stays black and I hear no sound. I've already made sure it isn't in sleep mode so I'm not sure what else to do. I watched a video a long time ago about something in the motherboard connecting to the screen popping loose and having to pop in back into place? But now I cant find the video. Please help!

You might be able to resolve the problem without disassembly by engaging the Safe/Recovery Mode. This is done by ensuring the system is off and holding L + R + A + Up (D-Pad) simultaneously and then turning it on without releasing those buttons. An iFixit guide is available here with more detail for your reference.

I hope this helps and that you'll be able to get your 2DS back in working order.

just wanted to add that this works regardless of whether the console is hacked or not

@darthmango Thanks for the correction! I figured that the update process there might result in a bricking. I'll adjust my answer shortly.

@stranger001 it's near impossible to brick a 3ds now, safe mode definitely won't cause one. Heck, the ds in that guide is even hacked; I used luma3ds to take the screenshots

As Stranger said, safe mode could be the solution here. In case it's not, though, here are a few more things you can try.

Turn off the console and take out any game cartridge, but leave the sd card in. Make sure the sleep switch is off, then turn the console back on and leave it alone for up to 15 minutes. If it boots by then, it's fixed and good to go

Check the volume slider to make sure the sound is on. If it's not, and you hear sound after turning it on, you probably have a broken display

If those two don't work, open the console up and reseat the connections, particularly the display cables and any that look loose or out of place
