Why does my MacBook Air not go to sleep?

My MacBook Air (revA) won't go to sleep with the lid closed. The fan continuously runs and the Apple logo light on the lid goes on and off randomly. Added to that when I run Safari, the menu's randomly cycle rapidly through on their on until I hit the esc key. I tried multiple PRAM resets but that didn't work. I finally tried an SMC reset and that worked, although my left shift key stopped working after the reset. 48 hours later all the same problems started up again. Could this be a problem with the motherboard or main battery and should they be replaced or repaired?

Would you disable your airport or other internet connection, remove the battery and DC adapter and let it sit for an hour then check the data and time?

This is a known issue

so much so that Apple wrote this a note about it.

If you have looked over that page and not found anything you might be doing to cause this, you can disable safesleep with the following terminal command:

"sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0" - omit the quotes.

Good luck,

N.

What's the difference between safe sleep and regular sleep?

- de

in safe sleep mode, the contents of RAM are first written to hard disk before the computer goes to sleep. that way if power is completely lost (e.g. battery discharges while in sleep), when you restart you get back to where you were and don't lose data
