Can't initialize HDD split from Fusion Drive. Error -69760

Hi all,

I have 2x separate harddrives, both 3tb that I've pulled from 5k iMacs. They were both part of Fusion Drives, but now that I've gone to use them as a lone harddrive, I can't initialize them in Disk Utility. Everytime I go to erase I get the same error code for both of them -

"unable to write to the last block of the device (-69760)"

I have ran DriveDX and from what I can see they're health drives. I have also tried a different harddrive cable and the same thing happens. Also, in Disk Utility and Terminal they're showing as 4.14tb drives and not 3tb. They're both Seagate.

I'm guessing they're both faulty, but I'm suspicious as they're both displaying the exact same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Can you give us the exact model of the drive so we can get its specs. Are they both the same as well?

Yes, they're both the same drives.

@andyc7117 - This is what I found Seagate ST3000DM001 HDD

At this point I think you need to use a better tool to wipe the drive as I suspect the boot sector is messing up the Apple Disk Utility. I’m thinking Apple is leveraging it to ID the initial boot sequence so a Fusion Drive is recognized in the Boot-up process.

Thanks Dan. Any recommendations?

@andyc7117 - Sadly I can’t offer a recommendation as APFS drives don’t behave like older HFS+ drives and I haven’t dug that deep. Many of the tools are nothing more than skins which access the same API’s Apple offers which is nothing different than what Disk Utility offers.

I have found using a Windows system appears to do the job but that was awhile ago with Mojave so your macOS level as well which flavor of Windows you get access to might not work.
