How do I replace the camera lenses covers using the kit?

I cracked the lense cover on the back of my phone. I see there is a lot here for purchase to replace these, but how do I go about doing this?

The camera lenses are simply glued into the housing with adhesive, so essentially what you'll be doing is picking the pieces out of the bezel if it's shattered, or just pry it out with something like an X-acto knife if it's just got a crack. The use of an iOpener/heat gun/hair dryer to apply heat to the glass will help soften the adhesive and make the glass easier to remove.

Once you've got the glass out, you'll need to clean out the adhesive; scrape it out as best you can then clean it with Q-tips and isopropyl alcohol (preferably 90% or higher, not the 70% stuff we all have around the house).

Once everything's shiny and clean, apply the adhesive that comes with the replacement lens then put in the lens. A little heat followed by some weight on it will help seal it good against liquid ingress.

So basically it's pretty much what you'd expect when you have a cracked piece of glass that's just held in by glue. Obviously you'll want to try not to get anything on the camera lens once it's exposed, and if anything does fall in, make sure you get it out or you'll be cursing yourself as you disassemble the phone to take the camera out and clean it again, lol.

That's it; it's all pretty straight-forward, so good luck and let us know how it goes!

Agree to this. Will also mention that I recommend removing the camera assembly from the phone before performing this procedure since it's easy to accidentally damaged the cameras with heat, a blade, or both. You can use iFixit's Guide to get the camera out if instructions for that would help.

@flannelist Thanks Alisha; that is absolutely the safest and most correct way to do this job, no question. Since it involves opening the phone it's a trade-off between the not insignificant extra effort involved and the relative ease of just replacing the glass.

If you think you can get the glass out without doing anything to the camera then go for it. On the other hand, if you want to be absolutely safe and not take any chances on damaging the camera, then remove the cameras first.

Should you decide to remove the cameras, it will make the repair a little easier, as you can push the glass out from the rear rather than having to pry it out from the front, so there's that.

If you get started and decide you may be putting your camera at risk, you can always pause your lens replacement and take the cameras out before finishing.

I personally remove them without opening the phone and by removing the camera. All depends on how the glass is cracked, I do it all the time at work. For someone who has never done this before I'd definitely recommend removing the camera but only if you're confident removing the screen. If not take it to a reputable shop. Not expensive, we usually charge about 25 pounds depending on model.

Don't forget to DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST. 👍

@dadibrokeit There is also the risk of screen damage if not removed correctly.

Should I also replace the camera itself if there has been a lot debris inside the camera for a while?

One of my lenses shattered, so I just used a combination of blow dryer heat, Ifixit tweezers and knife. I wouldn't recommend taking the phone apart to accomplish this simple task. Too much risk for too little reward by taking it apart.

Thanks iFixit!
