display quit, and replacement doesn't work either

My display started getting a green cast, then died within a day. I sent off for a replacement, and once I got it installed, I found that it still didn't work. I'm able to hook up an external display and it shows that the computer is working just fine. Should I assume the replacement display is bad? I am reluctant to ask my wife to let me take apart her old MacBook Pro to try hooking up a different display

It's a mid 2012 unibody

Hi

Are there any burn marks or corrosion on the screen connector?

- de

No burn marks, but there could be corrosion. What's the best way to clean it?

- de

The repair I did before the display went bad was to replace the MagSafe input. It worked fine for a few months before the display problem arose, but of course the repair involved unplugging the display cable.

I don't recall any difficulty with installing the cable, but could have done something inadvertently. I assume all the other components you mention are part of the logic board? I that my next project?

This series used LVDS signaling to drive the display which is more analog than what we are working with today with digital. A good way to think this is how our analog TV's once worked and what we have today with digital TV. With LVDS the pathway the signal travels can't handle weak connection or signal leakage whereas digital signaling just doesn't work or offers a strange checkerboard like pattern.

There is three areas which can cause LVDS signal distortion like this:

  • The logic board LVDS connector and the pathway to the CPU
  • The LVDS cable its self
  • The Displays LVDS connector and the pathways on the T-CON board

As you hadn't expressed how you went about the display repair it will be hard to dial-in where you need to look or if the replacement part was bad or you damaged something in the replacement process.

I'm hoping the LVDS cable that came with the new display is okay

You got me looking closer at the connector, and there's a couple of the contacts that look burned, and the corresponding area in the cable connector looks fried.

Looks like I'm going to see what replacing a logic board is like

@bobgent - You know you can replace the logic board connector, the part is available! But, you really need a hot air rework station to do it. Some have managed to use an iron but its not easy as you need to heat up all of the pins at the same time or slowly desolder each using solder wick and a dental pick.
